The Devonport Naval Base dates back to 1840 when William Hobson, then-Governor of New Zealand, arrived on the HMS Herald and established Auckland as New Zealand's (short-lived) capital. Today this base is an important administrative centre for the Royal New Zealand Navy.
Sitting majestically off the coast, Rangitoto Island’s distinctive symmetrical cone rises 260m over the Hauraki Gulf. The youngest island in the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto is the largest volcano to be formed in the Auckland volcanic field, erupting from the sea in a series of explosions roughly 600 years ago.
